PE vs. PP plastic materials: Which one is better?

In the world of plastic materials, PE plastic and PP plastic occupy a pivotal position, each with unique properties and applicable occasions. The differences between the two are mainly reflected in many aspects, including safety, thermal stability, environmental protection, and physical properties. 1. Heat resistance comparison

PP material stands out for its excellent heat resistance. Its operating temperature can reach above 100°C, which is very suitable for making microwave food containers, thermos and other heat treatment equipment. PE material is slightly inferior in heat resistance. Its heat resistance temperature is about 60°C, which is not suitable for long-term contact with high temperature or heat source.


2. Transparency comparison

PE material is favored for its high transparency and is often used to make beverage bottles and cling film, making the contents clear at a glance. Although PP plastic can also make transparent products, its transparency is slightly inferior to PE, and sometimes even slightly turbid.


3. Flexibility and impact resistance

PE materials are known for their excellent flexibility, which makes them widely used in the production of water pipes and food packaging bags, and can easily withstand bending and stretching forces. In contrast, PP plastics are more durable, with stronger compression and impact resistance, so they are often used to make products that require high durability, such as home appliance housings and children's toys.


4. Environmental protection and recycling characteristics

Although both PE and PP are recyclable, their degradation rates in the natural environment are very different. PP plastic decomposes quickly, only about 7-10 years; while PE materials may take up to 200 years to completely degrade due to their relatively slow decomposition process. This makes PE materials face greater challenges in terms of environmental protection.


5. Cost and price considerations

PE materials have a relatively simple production process, resulting in lower costs, and thus enjoy a more affordable price in the market. In contrast, PP plastics are slightly more expensive due to their excellent performance.


6. Safety

Although both PE and PP are food-grade materials, PP plastic may show higher safety in certain specific application scenarios, such as long-term contact with food or special requirements for material safety.


When choosing which plastic to use, it is necessary to consider the specific use environment. If an item needs to be heat-resistant, impact-resistant or easy to recycle, PP plastic may be more suitable; while for consumers who have high requirements for transparency or are price-sensitive, PE plastic may be more suitable. Therefore, before using these materials, it is crucial to fully understand the differences in their characteristics to ensure safety and effectiveness.
